The first time you do anything can be intimidating, but the first time you have a baby is a whole other level.

My wife and I had our first in late July. Needless to say, the learning curve has been pretty intense, at least for me.

Here's a handful of tips I can offer to other first time parents in Wyoming...

Learn The "Smile and Nod Technique"

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has opinions... the pregnancy, the delivery, what to do after the baby is born. Some of these opinions are helpful, but most are not. Ultimately, DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

Really Get To Know Your OBGYN/Midwife

You don't have to take them out to dinner or anything, but feeling comfortable about the person or people that may be delivering your baby is imperative. If the place you deliver has an option of multiple doctors, don't be afraid to say you don't feel comfortable with someone.

    Ask Questions, Even Dad...

The delivery staff is used to nervous, emotional, and clueless patients. Ask questions if you don't understand or are concerned about anything. Asking questions also helps build relationships with the person who may be delivering your baby.

    Expect Anything

Birth plans are great, but my wife and I learned first hand that they don't always go according to plan. Prepare yourself for many different variables. Not everything will be perfect.

    Pack Necessary Supplies

You know that a go-bag is necessary, but a couple things you might not be too concerned about... SNACKS! There's not much of an opportunity to eat... so pack as many snacks as you think you'll need, then pack some more. WARM CLOTHES... it's FREEZING in hospitals typically. Bring something warm and comfortable.
