Five Cowboys scored in double figures, as Wyoming rolled past Air Force 84-72 in the Mountain West opener for both teams Wednesday night in Laramie.

Wyoming (11-3, 1-0) knocked down 14 3-pointers in route to victory. That tied the second most in a game this season and third most in school history for a single-game. The Cowboys defense was equally impressive, as they held the Falcons to 36 percent from the field.

Head coach Allen Edwards stated in a release from the University of Wyoming his delight in the team’s defense.

“A big for us tonight was the way we defended Air Force. At the end of the day, you can’t take away everything they like to do, but you have to narrow it down. We told our guys to focus on not giving up any back cuts and to guard the three-point line. We wanted to give up contested two’s rather than easy lay-ups or three’s. I think our guys did a really nice job other than one late back cut in the second half.”

Alan Herndon and Hayden Dalton scored 15 points apiece. Alexander Aka Gorski and Justin James added 14 each, while Jason McManamen scored 11 points. Andrew Moemeka scored a career-high eight points on four dunks. Wyoming had 21 assists on 28 made field goals. Aka Gorski and McManamen had a career-best six assists each. James led the team with eight rebounds.

UW used a 26-10 surge over a six-and-a-half minute stretch of the second to break the game open. The Pokes led 51-39 with just over 14 minutes left. It was highlighted by four 3’s from Wyoming and three dunks from Moemeka that had Cowboys up 77-49 with 7:46 remaining.

Air Force (7-7, 0-1) used a 19-3 run near the end that made the score look closer than the game was. The Falcons were led by Frank Toohey with 11 points.

The Pokes led 18-8 midway through the first half. Air Force rattled off 10 straight points and tied it. UW responded with a 14-0 spurt for a 32-18 lead. The Cowboys led 41-26 at halftime.

Wyoming returns to action Saturday at UNLV. Game time is 2 p.m.
