A pair or San Francisco men were rescued from a remote area of Sweetwater County on Friday after getting stuck in the mud during a heavy rainstorm, according to a  release from Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell.

The sheriff says the men had been exploring the Tri-State Monument at the juncture of the Wyoming-Colorado-Utah borders when they got stuck on the south slope of Pine Mountain.

The 10,000-foot-mountain is the highest point in Sweetwater County. The men were not able to get a cell-phone signal, so they hiked to the top of the mountain to call for help.

Provided with the men's GPS coordinates, Search and Rescue volunteers, Chris Schutz and Ron Orr, in two separate vehicles were able to find the men around noon about a mile north of the Colorado state line.

Sheriff Lowell says conditions were so bad that one of the rescue vehicles got stuck on the way out. But because they had taken two separate vehicles in they were able to get the stuck vehicle out of the mud.
