Cheyenne Police Install Cameras At Spiker Parking Garage
Officer Kevin Malatesta says the security measures include the installation of cameras that are monitored in real time at the police department offices in the Public Safety Building.
Police are also taking other safety precautions, including having both officers and volunteers check the garage to make sure no one is camping in the bathrooms and the stairwells. Signs have also been installed at the garage reminding people the building is only for transit use and that loitering is prohibited.
Malatesta says the city also plans to repaint the bathrooms and repair the changing tables and dispensers. The steps are being taken after a survey for "Operation Change" which found a lot of people wanted to see steps taken to improve the security of the garage.
Malatesta says, however, that in fact there have actually been relatively few violent crimes reported at the garage. In fact, almost all police calls to the facility over the last few years have been for non-violent crimes such as public intoxication.
