Wyoming basketball now has two sets of prep school teammates after Tuesday’s announcement they signed forward Trace Young.

He’s 6’9, 210 pound player from Mt. Zion Prep in Baltimore, MD. Young played alongside guard Tariq Johnson, who signed on April 11 with the Pokes. Young is originally from Owensboro, KY and played his high school ball at North Hardin High School.

In an interview with KOWB, Young said to get this opportunity to sign and play Division I basketball,

“It’s an unexplainable feeling. It was a dream come true.”

Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards made the announcement Tuesday afternoon, as Young becomes the sixth member of this 2018 recruiting class.

Young averaged 15 points, five rebounds and three assists per game for one of the top prep school teams in the country. He is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN.

Asked why he chose Wyoming, Young said there were key factors after taking visits to numerous school.

“It came down to fit, style of play and just the people. I got on campus, and I got to see it. I got to feel the atmosphere, the family atmosphere, and once, you know, I got to know the coaches, it was no doubt in my mind where I wanted to go.”

He added the way the Cowboys play, “I feel like it fits my game perfectly. He (Coach Edwards) has a fast style of play. They love to shoot, and he’s almost position-less, and I feel like that describes my game perfectly.”

Edwards praised Young’s versatility in a release from the University of Wyoming.

"Trace is a young man with tremendous talent, who can play anywhere on the floor from the point position all the way to the four spot. Being 6'9", he handles it well, shoots it well and defends well. The aspect of Trace's game that may be underappreciated about Trace is his basketball IQ."

Coming out of high school, Young had interest from several power conference schools including USC, Texas Tech, Kansas State and DePaul. Out of prep school, Texas Tech showed interest again, plus Georgia Tech, Maryland, Memphis and Rutgers.

The other set of prep school teammates that have signed with UW are Bradley Belt and Brandon Porter, who played together at Washington Academy in Greenville, NC. They signed April 11, like Tariq Johnson did.

The Cowboys have two scholarships remaining. Coach Edwards said they are seeking at a lead guard and a “skilled” four-man, and he added they are looking at the junior college ranks and a transfer that can play right away.

The spring signing period runs through May 15 for Division I basketball programs.
