Wyoming’s annual Spring Game had a defensive tone to it, as the Gold beat the Brown 3-0 Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.

The Gold team, which featured the No. 2 offense and No. 1 defense, finished with 157 yards of total offense. Junior quarterback Nick Smith went 8-11 for 89 yards, but was sacked five times. Sophomore Garrett Gardner ran 12 times for 54 yards. He had 47 of those yards on the drive that set-up redshirt sophomore Brock Beddes’ winning field goal. Redshirt sophomore Kellen Overstreet added 27 yards on 10 carries.

Sophomore linebacker Logan Wilson anchored the Gold defense and had three tackles, including half-a-tackle for loss. Four other Gold defenders had three tackles each. They also had four pass break-ups. We caught up with Wilson to ask him about the game; his progress at middle backer and the whole linebacker corps.

Defensively, the Brown team was led by sophomore corner Davion Freeman with six tackles, while redshirt freshman safety Josh Boyd added five. The Brown squad also had five sacks, which included two by sophomore defensive tackle Brent Gilliland. Sophomore linebacker Ben Wisdorf also forced and recovered a fumble, but the Brown offense failed to capitalize on it.

Saturday’s Spring Game concluded five weeks of practice for the Cowboys. Wyoming will return for fall camp in August before opening their 2017 season at Iowa on Sept. 2. The Pokes will make their home debut at War Memorial Stadium on Sept. 9 versus Gardner-Webb.
