Thanks to a bunch of savvy scientists, they have discovered a massive lake of molten carbon underneath Yellowstone. Second Nexus talked about the discovery by geologists Saswata Hier–Majumder of the University of London and Benoit Tauzin of Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon.

The large body of liquid is under more than just Wyoming. It lies beneath Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, New Mexico, and even California. The bad news is when Yellowstone erupts, it will be even more apocalyptic than previously thought. The good news is we can now blame other states besides just pointing a finger at Yellowstone.

The data from seismic research also changes some of the preconceived notions about how much carbon is on Earth. The nearly 700,000 square miles of liquid carbon is 10 times more carbon thought to be on the earth. The liquid carbon was created by plate tectonic forces in the upper mantle of the Earth's crust.
