After the House and Senate signed off on the legislation just over a week ago, President Barack Obama just put pen to paper to make North American bison our national mammal. Along with The Bald Eagle, we now have two national animal symbols and Wyoming has both and features the bison on our flag.

While bison once numbered in the millions, they were reduced tragically to about 1,000. President Theodore Roosevelt led preservation efforts and now the bison numbers have increased back to about half a million here in the United States.

On an occasion such as this deserves a new national holiday and a show of love for animal that loves people. Give a wild bison a hug when you encounter one.

Here’s to the mighty bison, long may you roam.
