The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne is warning people about "brutal cold" temperatures for Friday night through Sunday morning in southeast Wyoming, with even worse windchills.

Windchills could reach a range making it dangerous for people and animals to be outside, according to a weather statement from the service.

Forecasters are calling for low temperatures Friday night at or below -10, with windchills that could reach -25 or colder. Forecasters also say 1-3 inches of snow is possible.

Temperature Saturday night could reach the sub zero range, with windchills again in excess of -25 possible. Gerald Claycomb of the  service's Cheyenne office issued the following statement Wednesday night:

1) There are a substantial number of pre-holiday high school basketball, wrestling, and swimming tournaments/meets scheduled for Friday and Saturday across the state.  It will be important for school administrators and athletic directors to stay current on the latest forecasts Thursday.  If you know who these decision-makers are in your county, it would be a good idea to give them a "heads-up" on the potential for a significant winter system.

2) Windchill temperatures will become dangerous Friday night through the day Saturday into Sunday morning. People and animals exposed to these very cold temperatures and windchills will suffer hypothermia and other cold related injuries if they are out in the elements for any prolonged period (more than an hour or so).
