Snowy Range Has Amazing Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
Wyoming is filled with wildlife everywhere you turn. But where are the best places to go, explore and see wildlife in their natural habitat?
The Wyoming office of tourism has released their top ten picks and the Snowy Range Scenic Bypass made their list.
Most everyone thinks of Yellowstone National Park, when they think wildlife viewing. With my own personal experiences in the park, I would agree that when wanting to see a wide variety of wildlife in one stop, its hard to compete with Yellowstone.
The Snowy Range is teaming with wildlife
Closer to home, the Snowy Range is a great spot to view wildlife right in our own backyard. Deer, Elk, Turkey, Bears and more call the Medicine Bow National Forest home. It’s loaded with hiking trails and plenty of adventure for the whole family. It’s no wonder it made it into the top ten wildlife viewing spots in Wyoming. If you go, be sure and be prepared.
If you’re going to go into the back country to view wildlife, be sure to take along the right gear and practice safety first when you go.
Here are a few things that I recommend taking with you in your backpack – a camera, GPS, binoculars, flashlight and a small first aid kit. Other things I usually carry are a jacket, some snacks, batteries and lots of water. Depending on the duration of your hike, your supplies will vary.
When watching wildlife – always remember these rules:
Observe animals from a safe distance – safe for you and the amimals.
Move slowly and casually, not directly at wildlife.
If you’re going to view wildlife – leave your pets at home.
Never chase harass wildlife – not to mention it’s illegal.
Using the animals’ behavior as a guide, limit the time you spend watching the animals if they appear to be stressed.
Respect private property, ask for permission to access private lands before you head out on a viewing trip.
Avoid animals that behave unexpectedly or aggressively. They may be ill, injured or have young near by.
And most importantly - DO NOT FEED WILD ANIMALS!
Now get out there and have some fun!
