Two years after facing each other in a bowl game, two long-time bitter rivals will face-off again in the near future in college football.

It was announced Tuesday that the University of Wyoming and Brigham Young University will play a home-and-home series. It renews a rivalry that dates back to the 1922 season.

Wyoming will play in Provo, UT against the Cougars on Sept. 24, 2022. BYU will make the return trip to Laramie Sept. 28, 2024.

The Cowboys and Cougars have faced each other 78 times through the years. It’s the third-longest series for Wyoming football trailing only the “Border War” against Colorado State, which has 109 meetings and an 83-game series versus the Utah Utes.

UW and BYU met in the Cowboys’ first night game Sept. 1, 1988. Wyoming won that game 24-14 on their way to the 1988 Western Athletic Conference title. The two squads also played each other in the first-ever WAC Title Game in Las Vegas in 1996. The 22nd-ranked Cowboys lost to the No. 5 Cougars, 28-25, in overtime. They also played in the 2016 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego with BYU holding on for a 24-21 victory.

This announcement completes Wyoming’s non-conference schedule in 2022 and is the third non-league game of the 2024 season.
