In what was called a "gift giving error," many Fremont County elementary school students were given a brand new cocktail glass as a present.

According to the Riverton Ranger, the gifts were handed out to hundreds of children who attended an April 14th celebration, 'Native American Day.' The event is held annually to share cultures from local tribes with school children.

After a presentation by Arapaho storytellers called "myths and legends," each child received a gift courtesy of Riverton's Wind River Hotel and Casino. A spokesperson from the casino noted that children were allowed to choose from a few different items, including playing cards, puzzles, maps, key chains, frisbees, and cocktail glasses.

While it appeared most of the students, aged 5-12 didn't think much of the cocktail glass option, parents around the county did. Several attended Tuesday's school board meeting in Riverton and expressed concern.

Riverton school board members, Riverton superintendent Terry Snyder, and representatives from the Wind River Casino all noted the cocktail glasses were given out in error. A unanimous consensus agreed there should have been a better "screening process" for the gifts and said there would be in the future.

One anonymous local mother of a nine-year-old told me, "I didn't think much of my daughter getting a glass, I just thought it was for momma to use."
