It’s an instant Cowboy Classic! One for the ages. The Wyoming Cowboys found a way to win their 2016 season debut, 40-34 in triple overtime over Northern Illinois.

The game had its twists and turns, but the Cowboys survived when sophomore QB Josh Allen scrambled away from pressure, eluded defenders and dove head-first into the end zone. That 7-yard scored capped a 4 hour, 14 minute game and the celebration was on.

Allen got dog-piled in the north end zone, but can you really blame the Pokes after last year’s 2-10 season? Not really.

Third-year head coach Craig Bohl had lots to be excited for. He was asked about Allen’s play, what they showed and how the defense played.

The Cowboys produced on offense with Allen throwing for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Hill ran for 125 and two scores. Tanner Gentry and Jake Maulhardt both surpassed 100 yards receiving.

The defense forced four 3-and-outs, had seven tackles for loss, including a sack and six pass break-ups.

Even QB Josh Allen and LB Lucas Wacha knew it was a team victory. Allen described his adjustments at halftime, while Wacha talked about the team defense they showed.

Wyoming will be back in action next Saturday at Nebraska. It starts at 10 a.m.
