A spokesman for the Wyoming Highway Patrol says troopers will be out in force for the upcoming three-day Labor Day weekend.

Sgt. David Wagener says the patrol is already participating in a national crackdown on impaired driving that will continue through the holiday on Monday.

He says federal grant money is being used to pay for overtime for troopers.

Wagener says for the holiday weekend troopers will be doing high-visibility enforcement targeting drunken driving as well as other violations. He says that while many people in Wyoming think the patrol isn't on-duty after midnight, during high-traffic periods that see an increase in drunk driving troopers will be on duty well into the early morning hours, especially looking for impaired drivers.

He says "it's not safe to assume that once the clock hits midnight there are no troopers out on the highways."

Wagener says the patrol is also joining with other law enforcement agencies in Uinta County as well as adjoining areas of Utah to target drunken drivers this weekend.

Wagener says over the Labor Day weekend last year there were 122 crashes on Wyoming highways, resulting in three deaths and 45 injuries.
