Thanks to recent efforts from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, anglers have the opportunity to catch a Kokanee Salmon or a Tiger Trout in Wyoming this fall.

Both of the fish have been stocked in the Lander area in the Shoshone National Forest. Tiger Trout are being caught in Cow and Upper Silas lakes. While Tiger Trout are interesting to catch, the Game and Fish Department tells anglers "Tiger Trout over 12 inches in Upper Silas Lake and over 10 inches in Cow Lake are uncommon." They expect the fish to grow significantly as they age.

Kokanee Salmon have been stocked at Louis Lake as well as New Fork Lakes and the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. They fish were around one-year-old and have been stocked at Louis Lake since 2014.

If you're planning a trip and are unfamiliar with the area, here's a few helpful tips.

  • Louis Lake - 26 miles from Lander on the Shoshone National Forest Road (also known as the Loop Road.)
  • Cow Lake - Less than 1/4 mile hike east of the Loop Road between Fiddlers Lake and the Little Popo Aggie.
  • Upper Silas Lake - A 4 mile hike from the Christina Lake trailhead at Fiddlers Lake.
