One person died and another was hospitalized after a Saturday afternoon crash roughly eight miles south of Thermopolis.

Cheyenne resident Jamie Winters, 41, died of her injuries after her vehicle hit a pickup truck and stock trailer on US Highway 20 near mile post 123 at 12:40 p.m. Saturday.

According to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Winters was northbound on US 20 in a 2014 Dodge Avenger when the car crossed the centerline into the southbound lane, where a 2012 Dodge 3500 pickup truck pulling a stock trailer was headed south.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, 52-year-old Randel Patton of Silt, Colo., saw Winters approaching and tried to steer right to avoid a crash, but a guardrail in the west ditch prevented him from doing so.

The Dodge Avenger struck the rear-end of the pickup and the stock trailer. Winters was wearing her seatbelt and was not ejected from the vehicle. She was taken by ambulance to Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis, where she died of her injuries.

Patton, who was also wearing his seatbelt, was not hurt. Winters' passenger, 22-year-old Steven C. C'Bearing of Cheyenne, was not wearing his seatbelt. C'Bearing was also taken by ambulance to Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital and was hospitalized.

The Patrol is investigating alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash. Winters was the 31st person killed on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same period in 2015 saw 56 fatalities statewide.
