A grass fire near Laramie Regional Airport knocked out power to the airport for a short time before fire crews extinguished the flames Tuesday afternoon.

Company Officer Gus Stonum with the Laramie Fire Department says it was most likely a passerby on Highway 130 that first reported the fire just after 3:30 p.m.

Stonum says the Laramie Regional Airport crash response truck knocked down most of the fire, which Stonum estimates burned an area roughly 150 feet by 30 feet in size, before three Laramie firefighters arrived at about 3:50 p.m. Three Laramie police officers responded as well, slowing traffic on Highway 130 as smoke blew across the roadway.

The firefighters used hand tools to mop up smoldering spots upon their arrival and, according to Stonum, determined the blaze was ignited by an arcing power line.

"We were able to determine that because it was still arcing when we got there," Stonum says. "It looked like a blue light at the top of the pole."

Stonum says a Rocky Mountain Power crew arrived and cut the power before later restoring service to the airport.

Stonum says the grass was fairly green and did not burn readily, a factor that helped keep the fire from spreading rapidly. The fire was completely out at 4:08 p.m.

In addition to the three Laramie firefighters and three Laramie police officers, one Cowboy Aviation employee was involved in the response and one Albany County Central volunteer arrived in a personal vehicle.

"It was something we were able to control pretty quickly," Stonum says. "There was nothing too close besides the Wyoming Air National Guard maintenance building, but they had a pretty good defensible space around it."

Stonum says no buildings were threatened and no one was injured.
