Cheyenne Fire Rescue was called out to a fire at the former location of the Hitching Post Inn on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded at a little after 9 a.m. and found a fire burning on the second floor of ''building 5."

The fire was under control by 9:16 a.m., although firefighters remained on the scene until about 10:30 a.m. as a precaution. The cause of the Tuesday blaze remains under investigation, but transients are known to often frequent the location and may have been a factor, according to investigators.

The Hitching Post Inn was once a landmark in Cheyenne and was known for being the preferred lodging place for state lawmakers for many years when the state legislature was in session. But the hotel went through a slow decline in the early years of the 21st century.

It was destroyed in a 2010 fire that investigators said was an intentional blaze designed to collect insurance money. Several people were sentenced to prison on arson and conspiracy charges related to the fire,
