Wyoming High Schools Debut New Sport, Clay Target Shooting

The first ever Wyoming State High School Clay Target League is underway with 40 students competing to be the top shot in the Cowboy State.

The inaugural season will include teams from four high schools; Hulett, Sundance, Upton, and Wheatland. League President John Nelson hopes that more students and schools will join them in the coming years.

“We are thrilled to expand our program to schools and athletes across the state,"  Nelson told Big Horn Radio Network. "The demand for alternative high school activities related to the state’s longstanding outdoor traditions has never been higher."

Nelson helped organize the co-ed league in compliance with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and federal Title IX regulations. Students are required to attend a firearms safety course and coaches must complete a leadership and safety certification program in order to participate.

The WSHSCL will host their first state tournament in June.
